Through the Camera Lens: A Rookie’s Perspective on the Media Team

2014 Build Season

My first season as a member of Team 341 has been nothing short of amazing. From hosting an off-season event, to the thrill of build season, to competing in New York, New Jersey,  Pennsylvania, and Missouri, my time so far has been both exciting and extremely rewarding.

After spending the fall training to be a member of the mechanical build team, learning how to use a bandsaw and disassemble a gearbox, this year’s game, Aerial Assist was announced on a cold, snowy January 4th. Initially, we broke into small groups to design different concepts for our robot, before showing them off to our teammates, and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each design. From this, I realized the important role that teamwork and communication helps play in creating a successful robotics team. After discussing which aspects of the game were most important, and settling on an overall design, we got to work. Soon enough, we were recreating the different field pieces of this year’s game, doing some rapid prototyping, and capturing the entire process on film and video.

About a week into build season, as prototypes came together in the shop, I was recruited by the media subteam to start a new team media account on the popular image-sharing website Instagram. Very quickly, I had gone from being a member of the mechanical build team, to managing an entire social media outlet for Miss Daisy. For now, this is still my main responsibility on the team, but I look forward to branching out within the media team during the off-season. I’m really looking forward to improving my video and photo editing skills, and look forward to having more responsibility on the media team next season.

Overall, I think that Miss Daisy has made some amazing strides forward this year, and I look forward to all of the amazing opportunities that still lie ahead of us.
