An Update on Sparky’s Robot World

Below is an update on our team’s Sparky’s Robot World project, which is a STEM initiative, created by the Wissahickon Robotics Team and sponsored by Dow Chemical.

What is Sparky’s Robot World?
Sparky’s Robot World is a traveling robotics exhibit designed to bring the excitement of science and technology directly to children in their schools and communities.

The final exhibit will consist of:

  • Multiple interactive touch-screen learning modules
  • Hands-on demonstration boards for teaching engineering concepts
  • A full playing field with 4 ball-shooting robots completing a game objective
  • An interactive A.I. Robot to greet visitors

Game Robots
One robot is complete and currently being used for testing in our local community. An additional four robots are under construction and will be completed by November.

Learning Module Videos and Media
Two learning module videos, one on electric motors and the other on pneumatic systems, are currently being filmed and will be complete by the end of November. Additional videos are planned and the whole project, including signage and additional print pieces, should be ready to roll in the spring of 2015.

Three students (Maria, Ethan, and Michael) are currently building an A.I. Robot that will look like our Sparky mascot and will greet visitors to Sparky’s Robot World. When finished, this robot will be able to greet guests, recognize faces, colors, and objects, as well as answer questions from guests. It will also have complete mobility and be able to wave, shake hands, and grasp lightweight objects. The drive base is currently being constructed and the full robot should be complete by March 2015.

Portions of the Sparky’s Robot World project will be released for public viewing in November and the full project will be launched in spring of 2015. Thank you to Dow for supporting our students and this important work.
