Week 4: Media Mayhem

The fourth week of build season is upon us all, and here at the media station there is always lots to do. So sit back, relax, and read all about our new rookie’s experience:

Welcome to the media team. Currently we have been preparing various videos for the end of the season. This week, interviews of leaders and rookies have been a priority. Although other team members view our presence as nerve racking, this week was my turn to stand in front of the camera. Being filmed for an interview gave me (as a rookie) insight into the process of interview-filming. For instance, I’ve learned that calming the subject is key for an interview that consists of quality material that isn’t “uh, oh… so, um”. Speaking of “uh,” this year I have learned the painstaking process of Adobe Premiere editing. Removing the impurities of interviews, renaming SD card dumps, and uploading photos to Flickr is the life of a media team rookie. Editing is quite frustrating, but over time I have learned how to make a video that goes beyond random snippets.

40051153512_3b2d4d3db1_oAnother major rookie endeavor is the art of photo-taking. At first, I had seen this task as the easiest job of a person on the media team. Oh, how simple-minded I was. Learning about “head room, aperture, exposure,” and other advanced photography terms had me realizing that the rule of thirds wasn’t the only thing that would keep my quality from flying away like birds. Thankfully, by now I have figured out how to take a half-decent photo.

Ah yes, social media. For recreational use, it can be a relaxing tool that can even be seen as stress relieving. On the media team, platforms like Instagram and others are seen as pedestals where only the best photos may take the stage. Taking photos that hold up to this quality standard can be difficult at times, but seeing your own pictures on a team’s professional Instagram page is actually quite rewarding. I love seeing all my work get uploaded to @frc341missdaisy

So yeah, media is pretty fun. In addition to the feelings of accomplishment from uploading my own photos and making my own team video, the people here are also super nice. They try to create a lighthearted environment, even if the work is grueling at times. Overall, being on the media team is an enriching experience that I hope to continue in the future.

And once again, brought to you by your wonderful media team, here is a parody of Dua Lipa’s  “New Rules”

One, one, one…
Talkin’ in my sleep at night
Makin’ myself crazy
(Out of my mind, out of my mind)
Typed it out and read it now
Hopin’ it would save me
(Too many times, too many times)
Light Room, it makes me feel like somebody else
Somebody else
But Premiere, it doesn’t love me, so I tell myself
I tell myself

One, don’t give up the grind
You know it’s only working ’cause I’m losing my mind
Two, don’t let it fade
Keep your white balance on the line
Three, don’t be afraid
You know you’re gonna throw the mac in the morning
And if you mess it up, you’re gonna have to redo it

I got my pics, I count ’em
I got my pics, I count ’em
I gotta edit them myself
I got my pics, I count ’em
I gotta edit them myself

I keep pushin’ forwards, but my edits keep deletin’
(Nowhere to save) no where
(Nowhere to save) no
15 gigabytes but only 1 is left for backup
(I never learn, I never learn)
But Premiere, it doesn’t love me so I tell myself,
I tell myself
I do, I do, I do

One, don’t give up the grind
You know it’s only working ’cause I’m losing my mind
Two, don’t let it fade
Keep your white balance on the line
Three, don’t be afraid
You know you’re gonna throw the mac in the morning
And if you mess it up, you’re gonna have to redo it

I got my pics, I count ’em
I got my pics, I count ’em
I gotta edit them myself
I got my pics, I count ’em
I gotta edit them myself

Practice makes perfect
But I keep missing the scale
(I got new pics, I count ’em)
Eat, sleep, and breathe it
Me-di-a will consume your whole life
(I got new, I got new)

One, don’t give up the grind
You know it’s only working ’cause I’m losing my mind
Two, don’t let it fade
Keep your white balance on the line
Three, don’t be afraid
You know you’re gonna throw the mac in the morning
And if you mess it up, you’re gonna have to redo it

I got my pics, I count ’em
I got my pics, I count ’em
I gotta edit them myself
I got my pics, I count ’em
(Daisy, you know I count ’em)
I gotta edit them myself

Don’t mess it up, don’t mess it up
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t delete it all, don’t delete it all
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t break the mac, don’t break the mac
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t put it off, don’t put it off
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t

You’re becoming media
